How the estimate works

Resting energy (RER) is calculated as 70 × body weight (kg)^0.75, with reference factors for healthy cats. Actual needs vary with body condition and activity. Plan weight loss and feeding for illness or therapeutic diets with your veterinarian.

The water estimate includes moisture in food. It is not the additional amount to drink from a bowl.

Cat food amount: common questions

How much should a 4 kg cat eat per day?

A healthy neutered adult cat of 4 kg needs about 238 kcal a day. If the dry food has 3,800 kcal per kg, that is about 63 g a day, or about 31.5 g per meal over two meals. Adjust to the calorie information printed on your food's package.

How is a cat's daily calorie need calculated?

Resting energy requirement (RER) is 70 × body weight in kg to the power of 0.75, multiplied by a factor for the cat's situation: neutered adult ×1.2, intact adult ×1.4, adult prone to weight gain ×1, growing kitten ×2.5. This follows the general estimate in the MSD Veterinary Manual for healthy cats and is a reference value.

How much water should a cat get per day?

A common guide is about 50-60 ml per kg of body weight a day, so about 200-240 ml for 4 kg. That is the total including moisture in food such as wet food, not drinking water alone.

How much dry food should I cut if I also feed wet food?

Subtract the calories in the wet food from the daily target and cover the rest with dry food. Enter the number of pouches and calories per pouch in the calculator and the dry food amount adjusts automatically.

Can I use this result to plan a weight-loss diet?

No. The result is a general reference for healthy cats. For weight loss, illness, pregnancy or nursing, ask your veterinarian to set the diet.
